PAPD ARFF Unit Responds to Potential Emergency at JFK Airport

June 17, 2026 by 911MEDIA

On Tuesday, June 16, at JFK International Airport, a Delta Airlines aircraft notified JFK Tower of a possible issue with blown tires. The PAPD Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) Unit responded, as it does to all aircraft emergencies at Port Authority airports, positioning at areas along the active runway. The aircraft landed safely and was held for a PAPD ARFF Unit inspection. Once PAPD ARFF declared the aircraft could proceed to its gate without being towed, the aircraft was escorted by the PAPD ARFF Unit to its Terminal 4 gate without incident.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the nation’s largest and busiest ARFF unit, protecting the flying public at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International and Teterboro Airports. PAPD ARFF units are FAA-certified, with each ARFF unit member receiving FAA recertification training twice annually in addition to daily training.
