Retired San Bernardino, California, firefighter John Martin began a cycling journey across the U.S. on September 11, 2025, in honor of the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001.
John stayed in firehouses during his yearlong trek and carried 2,977 dog tags, each bearing the name of a person who perished that day. He left a dog tag at each firehouse where he stayed and at every mile marker he passed.
John’s epic journey ended on September 11, 2026, the 25th remembrance of 9/11, at the World Trade Center. There, he presented retired Port Authority Police Lieutenant David Lim with a dog tag for Lieutenant Lim’s K-9 partner, Sirius, who was killed during the attacks on the World Trade Center.
Well done, John Martin.
