Two men were arrested within 15 minutes of each other at the Lincoln Tunnel Wednesday, authorities said.
Police saw Eddie Quiles Maldonado, 19, of Belleville, driving a black 2016 Chevrolet eastbound at the toll plaza in Weehawken at about 4:35 p.m., said Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority police.
His windows were tinted, which is a violation, so police pulled him over. As he complied, he hit a traffic cone, Pentangelo said.
As officers approached, they smelled marijuana coming from the car. Maldonado admitted to smoking it about an hour earlier. He couldn’t provide police with his driver’s license, said Pentangelo.
Maldonado exited the car and was unsteady, grasping it for support. He failed a field sobriety test and was arrested.
Police found marijuana in the door panel of the car, wrapped in a cigar wrapper. Maldonado faces charges of driving under the Influence of marijuana and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
At about 4:50 p.m. police stopped another man, Oshane McKenzie, 23, of Brooklyn in a 2016 Honda at the toll plaza. The rear license plate was unreadable, Pentangelo said.
As police walked to the car, they noted a strong smell of marijuana. McKenzie struck two traffic cones as he pulled over, Pentangelo said.
McKenzie failed a field sobriety test and was placed under arrest. He faces charges of driving under the influence.
