Port Authority cops sweep NYC PATH stations after fatal incident in lower Manhattan

October 31, 2017 by PAPBA

Law enforcement and emergency responders are currently in Downtown Manhattan where a truck entered a bike lane along West Street, a few blocks north of Chambers Street, and struck “multiple people on the path,” the New York Police Department said in a series of Tweets.

“There are several fatalities and numerous people injured,” the NYPD wrote on Twitter. “The vehicle continued south striking another vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms & was shot by NYPD.”

CNN is reporting that up to six people were killed.

Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said the PAPD is assisting in the investigation and that additional police units joined those normally stationed at the two PATH stations for the sweeps, which took place between 3:30 and 3:40 p.m.

Meanwhile, PATH service is not being affected by the investigation and the Holland Tunnel remains open in both directions. However, the Port Authority issued an advisory stating that delays are expected at the tunnel as a result of the investigation.

Pentangelo said PATH is currently cross-honoring MTA tickets at the World Trade Center and Exchange Place PATH stations. There are currently no travel restrictions in place on the PATH system regarding tonight’s New York City Halloween Parade, he said.

Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said Jersey City police detectives assigned to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces are assisting in the investigation.
