Police Officer Varvaro was responding to his 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony assignment at the World Trade Center when he was struck and killed by a wrong-way driver. Prior to his career with the Port Authority Police Department, Police Officer Varvaro was a Major League Baseball pitcher with the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox for six years.
