The Port Authority Police Department is responsible for law enforcement at four interstate bridges and two interstate tunnels; the George Washington Bridge, the Goethals Bridge, the Outerbridge Crossing, the Bayonne Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel and the Holland Tunnel. Together these crossings accommodate more than 116 million vehicles a year creating a monumental amount of work for Port Authority police officers assigned to these facilities. Of exceptional note is the George Washington Bridge, the most traveled bridge in the world with approximately 50 million vehicles traveling on it each year. The George Washington Bridge Command includes the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal in Washington Heights along with industrial and business parks in the Bronx and Yonkers, NY and Fort Lee, NJ. The Holland Tunnel Command also patrols the Brooklyn Piers, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and the Red Hook Ferry Terminal. The Lincoln Tunnel Command, in addition to the myriad of approach roadways in New York and New Jersey, also provides highway patrol on Route 495 to Route 3, in New Jersey. In addition to motor vehicle accidents, disabled vehicles and traffic conditions, Port Authority police officers are on the front lines in firearms and narcotics interdiction, suicide prevention and counter-terrorism while providing a vital law enforcement link between the states of New York and New Jersey.
The PAPD maintains police commands at the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel. The Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing are combined into the PAPD Staten Island Bridges Command (SIB). The bridges of the SIB connect Staten Island, NY with Bayonne, Elizabeth and Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The SIB Command also includes the Emergency Rescue Vehicle Unit that is staffed by police officers training in emergency first aid, vehicle extrication, firefighting and large, commercial vehicle removal. In addition to the three Staten Island Bridges, the SIB Command patrols the Howland Hook Marine Terminal and the Staten Island Teleport, a technology business park.

The police officers assigned to the ERV Unit receive specialized training in extrication, first responder CPR and Automated External Defibrillator, rollover vehicle response, heavy vehicle movement and hazardous spill containment.
