Marine Terminals

Ports of New York and New Jersey

  • Port Jersey – Port Authority Marine Terminal
  • Brooklyn Piers
  • Elizabeth Marine Terminal
  • Howland Hook Marine Terminal
  • Port Newark
  • Red Hook Container Terminal

In 1948 the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey assumed responsibility of operating Port Newark. During the years since, the Port Authority has seen considerable growth of its Marine Terminal facilities and now states the Port of New York and New Jersey is the nation’s third largest port. Local law enforcement is the responsibility of the Port Authority Police Department’s Marine Terminals Command.

Port Authority Marine Terminals consist of Port Newark, Port Elizabeth, the Auto Marine Terminal, Jersey City, NJ and the Global Container Terminal and Cruise Ship Terminal in Bayonne, NJ.

In addition to normal police activities that include traffic control, motor vehicle accidents, automobile thefts and industrial accidents, the location of these facilities, in the vicinity of New York Harbor and Newark Liberty International Airport, creates terror activity concerns. A former Ranking Member of a Homeland Security Subcommittee stated that terrorism experts call the location, “The most dangerous two miles in America.”

The Port Authority police officers of the PAPD Marine Terminals Command are aware of what every Port Authority police officer is aware of, the facilities they work in are high-profile terror targets.
