The Port Authority PBA always honors and remembers Sergeant John V. McCabe, who, on this date 79 years ago — August 22, 1946 — perished in his service to the people of New York and New Jersey.
Sergeant McCabe was killed in the line of duty when he was thrown from the running board of a police emergency vehicle while taking police action inside the Holland Tunnel.
He served with the Port Authority Police Department for 18 years, from May 26, 1928, until his death. He previously served with the Jersey City, New Jersey, Police Department.
Sergeant McCabe was the first Port Authority police officer killed in the line of duty. His selfless sacrifice is part of the long, heroic and noble lineage of the Port Authority Police Department.
Rest in peace, Sarge.
