National Policewomen’s Day: Honoring PAPD Captain Kathy Mazza

September 12, 2025 by 911MEDIA

On this National Policewomen’s Day, we honor Port Authority Police Captain Kathy Mazza (EOW 9/11/2001), whose legacy exemplifies the courage, resolve and dedication of the American policewoman.

The last day of Captain Mazza’s life was one of heroism and ultimate sacrifice. Leading a squad of officers, she helped rescue many. After the first tower collapsed, she and her officers were with a woman in a rescue chair, desperately trying to get her to safety. At one point, Captain Mazza ordered her officers to leave the building to save themselves while she remained with the woman. Witnesses reported that she used her weapon to shoot out large lobby windows, creating additional escape routes.

During the World Trade Center recovery operations, Captain Mazza’s body was found still beside the woman she had given her life trying to save. There is no greater love.
