Early Saturday morning, December 13, at approximately 4:30 a.m., a sedan crashed into the rear of a box truck on the George Washington Bridge, pinning the sedan’s driver. PAPD George Washington Bridge patrol units responded to the upper-level westbound lanes and found the pinned driver suffering from numerous injuries.
PAPD ESU Truck 1, staffed by Police Officers Steven Malleck and Michael Colonna, and Truck 5, staffed by Police Officers Anthony Tortorice and Roy Decker, responded, along with Port Authority GWB Tunnel and Bridge agents and FDNY units, and began an extrication operation. Airbags were used to raise the truck off the sedan’s front end. Once the truck was safely lifted, dashboard displacement tools were used to free the driver.
During the extrication, Englewood EMS medics provided emergency care to the driver. The driver was successfully freed and transported to the hospital. Excellent work by all involved.
