Recently, off-duty Port Authority Police Officer Brian Mahon was attending a community meeting of personal interest. During the meeting, a gentleman who had just finished addressing the audience experienced a medical emergency and collapsed. Officer Mahon and other attendees rushed to the man’s aid and found him unresponsive and without a pulse.
As others retrieved a defibrillator, Mahon began CPR. Once the defibrillator was applied, it indicated a shock should be administered. The first shock did not revive the man, and CPR continued. The defibrillator then indicated a second shock, which was administered, again with no immediate effect, and CPR was resumed. Refusing to give up, Mahon and those assisting applied a third shock, after which the man regained a pulse and consciousness.
After flatlining twice, three defibrillator shocks and five rounds of CPR, the man was speaking and asking what had happened. EMS arrived, assumed critical care and transported him to the hospital, where he was reported stable and doing well.
Port Authority Police officers receive extensive training, starting in the academy and continuing through in-service programs, to protect and serve the millions of people using Port Authority facilities in New York and New Jersey every day.
Outstanding work by Officer Mahon and all community members involved!
