Port Authority police make DWI arrest at Newark Airport

June 2, 2017 by PAPBA

At around 8 a.m. Friday morning, officers saw a 2016 black Chrysler Town & Country minivan with Connecticut license plates stop in front of the terminal with its engines still running, according to a press release from Joe Pentangelo, senior public information officer for the Port Authority Police Department.

Officers approached the driver’s side window and asked the suspect, Sammy Velazquez, 37, of Bronx, NY, for his license, registration and proof of insurance. When Velazquez opened the glove box, the officers noticed a clear plastic bag inside containing suspected marijuana.

Officers removed Velazquez from the Chrysler and placed under arrest. During a search a second bag containing suspected marijuana was found inside his jacket pocket and drug paraphernalia was found inside the car. Officers determined Velazquez was intoxicated, arrested him and impounded the car.

Velazquez was charged with driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle.
