Port Authority police arrest man driving wrong way on George Washington Bridge

November 30, 2017 by PAPBA

At about 5 a.m., officers received information that a 2017 Toyota sedan with New York livery plates was driving east in the westbound lanes of the upper level of the bridge, said Joseph Pentangelo, senior police public information officer. Construction workers on the bridge tried to stop the driver, Sterno Dorcelian, 58, of Rahway, but he refused to stop.

Traffic on the westbound side was briefly halted and police eventually was stopped by officers and arrested Dorcelian, Pentangelo said. An investigation revealed he had driven the wrong way from exit 73 and continued onto the bridge until about mid-span. No one was injured and nothing was damaged during the incident. Additionally, Dorcelian drove through a portion of roadway closed for construction, said Pentangelo.

Dorcelian was released and is facing charges of reckless driving, careless driving, delaying traffic, failure to comply with the directions of an officer, wrong way on a one-way street, disregard signs, unsafe lane change, failure to use proper entrances and exits, driving on a closed roadway and operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner.

Dorcelian is expected to appear in court Dec. 12.
